The Date Night Game

Many of you may recall my surprise date night with Owen a few months ago (has it really been that long?  Dang, it's July already folks - that's CRAZY!!).  I got off work on Saturday afternoon and my hubby surprised me with an overnight trip to Harrah's in Tunica.  We had a great time and we realized that one thing missing from our marriage was regular time together like that.  Fast forward to last weekend when we realized it had been over a month since we'd had a date night and Owen presented a challenge - it was my turn to plan date night.  Oh goodie :)

Now, in my own defense, I didn't have a whole lot of time to plan this out and I also didn't have the abilities to plan an overnight trip since I had to work the nursery at church the next day so I opted for a nice dinner out, just the two of us.  After posing the question to a few friends, I decided on The Majestic Grill downtown.

When deciding on a date night venue, I only had a few small criteria to meet:
1.  It needed to be a place we had never been
2.  It needed to be a place I would probably not take the kids.
The Majestic Grill fit all of those; AND, it was more of a casual dining place on top of that, which was nice.  I get dressed up during the week for work; the last thing I want to do on the weekends is to get dressed up.

Owen and I parked at a pay lot very close to the restaurant and walked over; they have outdoor seating but, uhm, HELLO, it's the summer in Memphis and I don't wish to sweat to death eating dinner so we got to eat inside.  We had reservations for 6pm and we were seated immediately.  I ordered water and a glass of wine and Owen had a Coke - we ordered an appetizer and our waiter brought us some DELICIOUS bread.  I opened up my silverware and one of the first things I noticed was how large my fork and knife were.  I mean, check out these things:

Are these not ginormous??

For our appetizer we opted for the crab cakes; Owen is a big fan and he likes it when they are so full of meat that they fall apart.  Me, however, I like it when they have a nice crispy coating.  These were ok by Owen's standards in that he thought they needed less filler but they got the crunchy coating that I like.

I ran Saturday morning AND we took Samantha to a birthday party that afternoon so by the time we got to dinner I was starvin' marvin.  Trying not to completely fall off the boat, I opted for their grilled salmon with jasmine rice and asparagus.  I remembered to take a picture before I ate all of it.  This dish was wonderful.  The salmon had a rosemary honey glaze that was awesome and the fish had a nice sear to it.

Owen ordered one of The Majestic's famous hamburgers with parmesan fries.  He would not allow me to take a picture of it but he said it was tasty; we'll have to take his word for it :)

Dessert was a bit different here; they only offer a small variety of shot glass-sized desserts and they bring the dish to your table and let you pick one right then and there.  Owen got the Key Lime pie shot and I got the Tiramisu.

It was REALLY good, smooth and creamy and the only downside to it was I wish the shot glass was bigger.  Is the Majestic trying to tell me to limit my sweets??

Overall Owen and I really enjoyed our dinner and date night experience and I hope we get the chance to go back soon.

Now that Owen has challenged me to the date night game, it is his turn to plan next month's and lucky for him - our anniversary is in July and he has already let me in on a little secret - we are going out of town again.

Care to guess where we're headed??? :)

**While this may seem like a restaurant review, and it kinda is, I was not asked by The Majestic Grill to review their restaurant nor was I compensated as such.  All opinions are entirely my own.  If they DID want me to do a review though, I certainly would not object :)

QOTD:  Do you and your significant other take turns planning date night??

  1. What a fun night!

We don't take turns, but occasionally Mr PugRunner will surprise me with a nice dinner or a night away. It's hard because we don't have fmaily in town so child and pug care can sometimes be an issue, but we make it work.

Can't wait to see where you are headed for July!

    1. We are very lucky that we have family in town that is more than willing to watch the girls!

  2. I'm a BIG fan of date nights. They are so important for a health marriage. I love that you guys take turns planning them. So cute!
