Earth Day 5K Recap

Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day - we could not have asked for better weather for the Earth Day 5K at Shelby Farms Park!

You'll recall I told you on Friday that this was going to be a different race for me because I was going to be pacing my friend Andi in her second 5K - this was my first time pacing and you'd have to ask Andi but I don't think I did a very good job at being her coach :(  We still had a great time though!

Coach fail #1 - Owen took me on a surprise date Saturday night (more on this later!) and by the time we got home Sunday it was time to change and head out to the race so I completely forgot to check my Garmin and, of course, it was almost dead.  Hard to maintain a 3:1 run/walk ratio when I didn't even know how long we'd been running.  Thankfully, my buddy Kristan stuck with us for about the first mile and she let me borrow hers.

Coach fail #2 - I didn't maintain good form while trying to stay at her pace.  After awhile my knee started hurting.  I will certainly be on the look out for that next time.  My friend Bill from work joined our group and he stayed with Andi during the times I ran on ahead to shake my legs out (coach fail #3).

Coach fail #4 - I ran on to the finish (I'm pretty sure I crossed around the 45:00 mark) and signed my finisher card (the race wasn't chipped) but by the time I finished that and was gonna run back to meet up with Andi and  Bill to finish they were approaching the finish line.  I did run up and met her in the chute but I feel bad that I wasn't in the chute with her when she crossed.

Fail #5 - I failed to put on sunscreen and now have a nice triangular sunburn around my neck and a farmer's tan on my arms - LOL.

Overall - Andi did a GREAT job and we had a great time, I just think I need to read up on pacing before our next run so that I can do a better job at it!  I enjoyed this race last year and this year and plan to do it again; Shelby Farms is a beautiful place and provides a great backdrop to any race!

QOTD - Did anyone else #epicfail at pacing their first time??
